Health information : Fast food, one of the causes of chronic diseases and dangerous

Health information : Fast food, one of the causes of chronic diseases and dangerous - Western-style fast food restaurants, which evolved throughout Asia, has been blamed for rising cases of diabetes and coronary heart disease in this region. In the analysis of more than 50 thousand Singaporeans of Chinese descent, those who ate fast food twice a week or more had a 27 percent increased risk of developing diabetes and a 56 percent risk of death from coronary heart disease.

"Those who consume a Western-style fast food greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes," said study leader, Dr. Andrew Odegaard, from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, Minneapolis.

He stated one of the reasons was trans-fatty acids that were never regulated in the Asian countries. There is documentation states that fat is harmful to health is still provided by fast food manufacturers outside the United States.

The study was published online July 2, 2012 in the journal Circulation.

Consumption of Western-style fast food, including McDonald's, Burger King, and KFC, has rapidly expanded in developing countries around the world. There is concern among health experts that diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome, occurs along with an increased incidence of coronary heart disease.

So far, said Odegaard, studies directly linking the consumption of fast food with very limited health. Singapore health authorities Odegaard and colleagues provide an opportunity to study the incidence of type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease among 52 584 infected, between 1993 and 1998. For coronary heart disease mortality, deaths recorded up to the end of 2009 as many as 1,397 people.

Overall, people who eat at fast food restaurants twice per week or more had a significantly increased risk of diabetes and death from coronary heart disease.

Although the researchers state that trans-fatty acids may be one reason for the increased risk of death from coronary heart disease, it's just a hypothesis at this stage. Increased consumption of fast food may just be a prominent marker of diet and bad lifestyle and not in terms of causality.
